Artelis is developing iCELLis™, a scalable high-cell-density (HCD) single-use bioreactor for protein and virus production, which offers the advantages of process intensification. The technology is based on a fixed bed filled with porous macrocarriers or microcarriers. Cultivations with various cell types (CHO, VERO, MDBK, CEF, etc.) have consistently achieved viable cell densities of 100 to 250x106/ml.
This technology dramatically increases the volumetric productivity by 20- to 100- times compared to conventional systems and consequently, leads to a dramatic decrease in footprint and bioreactors volumes. A 50-liter iCELLis™ bioreactor can equal the production of a standard 5,000-liter system. Thanks to this significant reduction in size, manufacturing facilities can be completely re-designed. Artelis’ solution is based on its own patented circulation and aeration techniques.
