Artelis operates in the incubator for innovative start-ups created by the Solvay Group on its R&T site at Neder-over-Hembeek (Brussels, Belgium).
Artelis currently occupies a 1,000m² facility with two cell- and viral-culture areas, including one 50m² BL2 Class 10,000 zone.
These facilities are fitted with single-use bioreactors with a capacity of 5-200 litres (animal cell culture bioreactors) for batch, fed-batch and perfusion cell culture. Perfusion is carried out using ATF4 (alternating tangential flow from Refine Technology). Monitoring systems are supplied by Pierre-Guérin Biolafitte, Sartorius B Braun and New Brunswick Scientific and both regulate and record all the relevant parameters involved.
Artelis also has an analysis laboratory equipped with a Bioprofile-100 metabolite analyser supplied by Nova Biomedical and a Personal Cell Analyser (cell cycle, apoptosis, etc.) supplied by Guava Technologies.
In the near future, Artelis will be able to offer additional infrastructure including three further culture facilities with one Biosecurity Level-3 (BL3) facility. Artelis will then be able to provide cell-culture services in single-use bioreactors with a capacity of 500-1,000 litres. This 400m² expansion will make it possible for Artelis to extend the development services it offers using equipment to purify proteins and viruses (chromatography, tangential filtration and ultra-filtration compatible with the size of the bioreactors).
